Meet the Characters: Edgar and Fred - a Q&A
Share
If you’ve ever wondered who’s quietly running things behind the scenes at Upper Room Prints, it’s not me. It’s Edgar (The Gentleman Frog) and Fred (the world’s most comforting Newfoundland).
They agreed to a little Q&A today. Yes, they have opinions. No, Edgar will not fetch anything. Fred will handle that.

Q: Edgar, how would you describe yourself?
Edgar: I am composed, observant, and quietly dignified. I value still water, reeds, thoughtful pauses, and my bowler hat. It is not a costume. It is simply me. I notice small things and treat them with care.

Q: Fred, what about you?
Fred: I am forty percent fluff, forty percent heart, and twenty percent water. I am loyal, mildly concerned about everyone at all times, and always ready to lean my full weight against anyone who needs it. Comfort is my profession.

Q: How did you two come to exist in the Upper Room Prints universe?
Edgar: I grew out of a love for gentle outdoor imagery and slow noticing. The bowler hat is a quiet nod to naturalists of another era, but without performance. I represent ponds, moss, and calm observation.
Fred: Newfoundlands (Newfies) are rescue dogs, water dogs, and all heart. That translated directly. I balance the smaller characters. I am here for softness, care, and companionship. Not humor. Steadiness.

Q: What’s a perfect day off for you two?
Edgar: A slow morning near water. I prefer reeds and reflective surfaces. Fred prefers mud and swimming opportunities. We arrive early, before people. Fred gets wet. I remain dry. We share lunch. His is generous and slightly crushed. Mine is precise. We sit together. If there is breeze, I close my eyes. If there is sun, Fred provides shade. We return home content.

Q: Any favorite memories from markets or customer reactions?
Edgar: People often recognize us as a pair before it is stated. This is correct.
Fred: People say, “He needs his dog.” They understand. I make sure Edgar gets home safely. That is my role.

Q: Where do you show up in the shop?
Edgar: I appear in quiet, nature-centered pieces. Prints, journals, greenhouse and reed scenes. Work that involves noticing.
Fred: I show up in comfort pieces. Sitting, leaning, being present. When we are together, the composition settles. My favorite designs are the calm ones. Nothing dramatic. Just proximity.

Q: For someone new to Upper Room Prints, where should they start?
Edgar: Begin with a piece featuring me in my natural environment. Reeds, water, greenhouse. Stillness is the entry point to this world.
Fred: Then add me. Once you know Edgar, I make sense. It is not collecting characters. It is collecting companionship.

Q: Will we see more of your story?
Edgar: Possibly, but not in a dramatic sense. We are not narrative-driven. We are episodic. Small scenes. Seasonal shifts. Quiet presence.
Fred: I stay. Edgar notices. That is the story.

Q: Anything that’s surprised you about yourselves?
Edgar: People understood our pairing immediately. I am not delicate. I am composed. Fred is not merely soft. He is steady. This balance appears to resonate.
Fred: I anchor safety. Edgar anchors attention. That is how we exist.
